Lot of the people think that dryness causes dandruff, but it’s not absolutely true. Many people who have oily scalp also complain of dandruff. Most of the people do not know the actual cause of scalp dandruff. The Scalp dandruff is actually caused by a tiny fungus. Moreover, the dandruff is basically the flakes of dead skin. The dead skin over the normal skin causes itching and discomfort. Itching breaks and dislodges the dead skin from the scalp in the form of minute whitish particles and these particles appear as dandruff.

 

Lack of scalp hygiene is the foremost cause of scalp dandruff. In the management of dermatological or skin diseases, hygiene always comes first. In order to get rid of scalp dandruff wash you hair every other day with a good quality anti-dandruff shampoo. Choose a good quality anti-dandruff shampoo. Now a question arises, how to choose a good quality anti-dandruff shampoo? or how would you know whether a shampoo is of good quality or not?.

Well, What you can do is to look at the ingredients. Anti dandruff shampoos usually contain, Zinc Pyrithione, Ketoconazole, silicylic acid, Sulfur, Sellenium Sulphide and coal tarr extract etc. Don’t choose a shampoo which contain lots of chemical ingredients. Choose a more natural shampoo that contains natural oils extracts such as coconut oil, olive oil and natural extracts of aloe vera etc and a single anti fungal agent (for example ketoconazole or Zinc Pyrithione). Don’t choose a shampoo which contain sodium lauryl sulfate. Which is a cheap emulsifying and foaming agent used in the shampoos and even in the other detergents which are used to wash clothes and utensils.

Don’t wash your hair daily. As each time you wash hair the natural protective balance of your scalp disturbs. Wash on every other day or three times a week. Comb your hair frequently, as combing removes the dead skin and improve circulation. If you have scalp lice problem then get rid of that too. As lice contribute in the formation of dandruff both through stimulating vigorous itching and harming the skin.

 

So in short, to treat scalp dandruff; follow the following steps.

1. Take good care of scalp hygiene, comb your hair frequently with a blunt comb (avoid sharp combs)

2. Choose a good natural anti-dandruff shampoo which contain a single anti-fungal agent.

3. Don’t shampoo your hair daily. Shampoo on every other day or three times a week.

4. If you have lice in your hair. Get rid of them too by using anti-lice shampoo or other anti-lice agents (topical or oral)

5. If you have an oily skin then choose a shampoo that is fit for oily skin. If your skin is dry then choose one that is made for dry skin.
