In Capital Hospital Islamabad A workshop on the basics of upper gastrointestinal endoscopic techniques was held on 30th of October 2014. Dr Siddique Akbar Satti the Patron, with cooperation and coordination of Dr Farhal Ali, managed to conduct this auspicious, educational and practical session with great success. The chief guest was Dr Shoaib Shafi, the Professor of Medicine from Rawalpindi Medical College, Pakistan, who is also well-known for his efforts to modernize the field of gastroenterology in Pakistan.
“The objective of this workshop is to educate the young doctors about the indications and prerequisites of upper of GI endoscopy, the basic technique and procedure, complications during and after the procedure, counselling of the patient”, said Dr Siddique Akbar Satti, The Supervisor and patron of the course.
The workshop started with the recitation of holy verses from The Holy Quran. After that, Dr Farhan Ali introduces the speakers, Dr Beenish, Dr Zahid ul Zahidin and Dr Maria Habib who explained, the anatomy of the upper GI tract, indications and complications of endoscopy respectively. After the theoretical overview, Dr Siddique Akbar Satti was invited on the stage who thoroughly explained the procedure of endoscopy. He explained the functions of different parts of an endoscope, how to handle and operate it? what should be the position of the patient? how to direct the endoscope into the oesophagus? how to identify oesophagus, stomach and duodenum? what is dentate line etc?. He also explained the prerequisites of the upper GI endoscopy. The video demonstration of the endoscopic procedure was done.
After that, all participants were divided into three groups and each group was provided with a scenario to deal with. For example, Group 1 has to counsel a patient in order to get his informed consent for the endoscopic procedure. Group 2 had to deal with an agitated patient and group 3 had given a task to disclose to attendants of the patient that you have perforated his oesophagus while taking a biopsy. That was really entertaining. Every doctor participated in it and enjoyed. “I don’t know how good doctors are you but definitely, you all are excellent actors” Dr Satti commented with a spreading smile on his face.
After that entertainment, tea break was announced and after tea break participant were asked to get to the endoscopy room. Where Dr Siddique Akbar Satti first explained the procedure on a patient, He showed the doctors how a patient is handled and prepared for an endoscopic procedure. The first patient is asked to gargle with an anaesthetizing agent then patient lie down and a mouth guard is inserted in his mouth that protect the endoscope from the teeth of the patient, and then gently it is moved forward towards the oesophagus. After a quick demonstration of the patient. The same procedure was repeated on a dummy, but in this case, Dr Satti explained the role of every part of an endoscope in detail. He told his participant how to move the endoscope forward, how to turn it to different directions, how to push air and water and how to suck it back from the field.
After the demonstration on the dummy, each and every participant handled the endoscope and learned to use it and interact with its different parts, and also they learned to take biopsies. All the participants seemed very excited about it, because many of them had have their first visit in the endoscopy room and in their that first visit, they were able to handle the endoscope, learned to use it and performed a biopsy.
After this long educational, informative, practical and also entertaining session, all young doctors were invited to the auditorium where certificate distribute ceremony was held.
Dr Shoaib Shafi, one of the childhood friends of Dr Siddique Akbar Satti, was the chief guest. Dr Shoaib Shafi is the Professor of Medicine of Rawalpindi Medical College and also The Councilor of College of Physician and Surgeons Pakistan.

Young doctors, love his personality, behaviour and relation, that’s why his department in Benazir Bhutto Hospital Rawalpindi has the highest merit for the selection of house officers and PG trainees. Every newly graduated wants to go to his unit for training, and I had heard so much about him and wanted to see him and today when I saw him, was really surprised to see that how come a person with that height of reputation can be so much down to earth, friendly and polite, really amazing, inspiring and surprising. I am really thankful to Dr Siddique Akbar Satti as he has invited him today and provided us with an opportunity to learn from Dr Shoaib’s presence.” Said Dr Adil Ramzan.
