I have got a period can I still be pregnant? This is another question that has been asked to us several times. You may read our previous topic related to it “ chances of pregnancy after having unprotected sex”.
If you have had unprotected sex and after a few days you have noticed vaginal bleeding then there is a possibility that you may have got one of the following things.
1. Normal Menstrual bleeding
2. Implantation bleeding.
3. Dysfunctional uterine bleeding
4. Bleeding from the lower genital tract.
5. Bleeding from urethra instead of vagina.
Normal Menstrual Bleeding:
If you had read the article “chances of pregnancy after having unprotected sex” then now you know that not every unprotected sex result in pregnancy due to various factors. So there is a possibility that the bleeding is menstrual.
Implantation Bleeding.
This is something that every woman should know. Many women confuse implantation bleeding with menstrual bleeding and think that they are not pregnant and have got period. But the condition can be exactly the opposite. Implantation bleeding is an indication of pregnancy that tells us that newly formed embryo has attached to the wall of the uterus. During this attachment, slight bleeding may occur. This bleeding is different from menstrual bleeding. The blood in implantation bleed is much thinner and flow is slight and of shorter duration (less than 3 days). Implantation bleed normally occurs nearer the normally expected date of menstruation. That’s why a woman thinks that she has got her period but actually it's not period but implantation bleed.
Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding:
Some women already have diseases such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, benign or malignant tumours of the uterus and ovarian cystic syndromes which result in irregular bleeding. but these women have a history of more frequent, irregular and heavy menstrual bleeding and can easily be identified.
Bleeding from the lower genital tract.
Vagina diseases, (e.g.. vaginitis) and cervical infection, tumor or trauma may cause bleeding. which may occur at any time of the month. Whenever a woman expects a pregnancy and vaginal bleeding occur, professional consultation should be scheduled as soon as possible to exclude these conditions because vaginal and cervical infections may cause spontaneous miscarriage.
Bleeding from Urethra instead of vagina.
bleeding from the urethra (in urinary tract infections) may mimic vaginal bleed and many women mistakenly think that blood is coming from the vagina when actually it’s not.
So there are many causes of vaginal bleeding. Whenever a woman expects pregnancy and she notices bleeding then she must consult a doctor to find out the cause of bleed, whether it is menstrual, implantation or dysfunctional bleeding.
